Heritage Network East Gippsland’s latest exhibition Living Memorial took a look at the way we have used trees and gardens to commemorate events and people.
This was particularly common in Australia after World War 1, when communities needed some form of memorial as a grave substitute, when so many young men died overseas.
In East Gippsland these include:
- the Avenue of Honour at Buchan South
- the Memorial Carvings at Lakes Entrance
- the Jarramond Avenue near Orbost.
Also some beautiful memorial gardens, such as the rose garden at Nowa Nowa and the ever-evolving Main Street Gardens in Bairnsdale.
